Snippets and quotes taken from the Ronnie Ives Collection on BRITBASE.
1957/58YORKS CHESS ASSOCIATIONThe IM Brown Shield went to the winner of a series of playoff games. YEN Doncaster beat Huddersfield II 4½-3½ in the final.
INTERNAL COMPSAn outstanding season for JE Povey, he won both the Club Championship and Silver Knight trophies.
And one of his games:
COUNTYYorkshire reached the final of the 1958 County Championships. (Sadly, the adjournments came back in Essex's favour.) There were five Leeds CC players in the team: Haygarth, Goldberg, Ives, Povey and Addingley.
1958/59YORKS CHESS ASSOCIATION"Ten year old Marcus Walsh, the son of a Cross Gates doctor, was included in the Leeds II team against Hull YPI."
INTERNAL COMPSCG Addingley had a good season in the Woodhouse after previously running the Sat 2nd team. Povey took the Club Championship for the second year on the trot.
BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPThe 1959 British was held in York. Penrose, Haygarth and Golombek were = 1st on 8 pts but Penrose won the play-off. Here's a nice Haygarth game from Rnd 4.

1959/60YORKS CHESS ASSOCIATIONINTERNAL COMPSClub records were badly kept or have been lost for this period. We have no records for the Club Championship or Handicap. Internal competition tables have been reconstructed from the Ronnie Ives Yorkshire Post articles.
1960/61YORKS CHESS ASSOCIATIONWoodhouse Cup shared:
Leeds and Sheffield LEEDS III were champions of the Silver Rook (Div 3).
WEDNESDAY LEAGUEINTERNAL COMPSNo records for Club Championship or Handicap. |
Woodhouse Cup
(YCA Div 1) The Woodhouse captain was CG Addingley who was also President of the YCA. "Mr Duke" won the Silver Knight (Woodhouse Cup top scorer trophy).
Yorkshire Lightening Team Champions:
Leeds I |
IM Brown Shield (Section 2)
(YCA Div 2) The IM Brown Shield was played in two sections. Sheffield University won section 1 and played Leeds II in a play-off for the title:
Sheffield Uni 4½-3½ Leeds II
|
Silver Rook
(YCA Div 3) Game difference didn't decide titles in the 60s so again a play-off was needed to decide the winner:
York III 3-3 Leeds III
(York won on board count) YEN (Leeds) = Yorkshire Evening News (Leeds) Chess League. Needs further research but probably a proto-Leeds Evening League as the Hon Secy was Ken Appleby, a member of Leeds CC active in all the local associations. Does anyone know anything else?
